Steep Terrain Harvesting

Timber harvesting on steep slopes and in difficult terrain is a demanding activity that requires specialized equipment and strict measures to ensure both safety and environmental protection – especially soil protection, as it is often exposed to erosion and deep rutting.

Traction winches, such as the T-WINCH, play a key role in modern forestry operations. They are designed not only to enhance operator safety, but above all to minimize soil damage. By providing consistent pulling force, they support the movement of harvesters and forwarders on steep terrain, reducing wheel slip and preventing excessive soil compaction.

Its main advantage is that it enables timber harvesting on steep slopes where operations would otherwise not be possible to carry out safely and efficiently without winch support. It ensures machine stability, eliminates the risk of slipping, and significantly reduces soil damage. This makes it possible to process timber even in challenging terrain that would otherwise remain inaccessible.

In addition to improving safety and protecting the soil, it also reduces fuel consumption, resulting in cost savings and contributing to a lower overall environmental impact.

This technology significantly enhances the efficiency and sustainability of timber harvesting and represents an important element of responsible forest management – with respect for nature and future generations.

The T-WINCH traction winch is a versatile external device that can be used wherever unassisted machine movement poses a high risk to both operators and equipment. It is primarily designed to enhance operator safety while minimizing soil impact. It is ideally suited for demanding conditions such as steep or hard-to-access terrain, where it enables safer and more efficient operation of harvesters and forwarders. By using the T-WINCH traction winch, overall safety is improved and soil damage is significantly reduced, as machines are not required to generate excessive traction on their own.

Timber harvesting with a traction winch is an efficient method for operating in challenging terrain such as steep slopes or wetlands. The process begins with positioning the winch on a stable location. The harvester or forwarder is then secured with the winch cable and gradually lowered down the slope. The traction winch is equipped with a cable length of up to 500 meters. Once the harvesting line has been fully processed, the machine is pulled back up the slope using the winch.
This method minimizes soil damage and significantly improves operational safety.

TRIOMAX operates two harvesters, three forwarders, and four traction winches:

  • Komatsu 931XC harvester
  • John Deere 1470D ECO III harvester
  • 2× Komatsu 875 forwarders
  • Timberjack 1410D forwarder
  • 2× T-Winch 10.2 traction winches
  • 2× T-Winch 10.3 traction winches

TRIOMAX specializes in timber harvesting using traction winches, enabling efficient operations in steep terrain. Our expertise covers a wide range of harvesting methods, including thinning in both coniferous and deciduous forests, handling bark beetle outbreaks, and harvesting in challenging conditions following natural disturbances such as windblow. We also provide motor-manual harvesting and carry out specialized operations near roads and public infrastructure.

TRIOMAX specializes in forestry operations in the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, and Ireland.
Our key clients include well-established institutions such as ThüringenForst, SachsenForst, Bayerische Staatsforsten, Österreichische Bundesforste AG, Coillte, Lesy České republiky, as well as a number of smaller private forestry companies.

Yes, we hold the KUQS certification, which recognizes our competence in environmental management, quality, and safety. This prestigious certification, issued by the Association of Forestry Contractors of Saxon Forests, confirms our professional standards in forestry services and commits us to maintaining the highest level of quality in our work.
